The territory described on this web site is situated above a hilly complex whose highest summits (750 838 metres) are concentrated towards the east, over the gorges dug by the Melfa river. Following these are two Karst tablelands which gradually descend towards the west, opening radially, as they are dug by numerous torrents and impluvia which originate precipices, gullies, big and small valleys, in a continuous entering and coming out from wild chestnut groves, thick oak-groves, amongst spots of hornbeams, junipers, under tunnels of hawthorn and tall brooms. The routes therefore present a wide range of soils: rock based, red earth, soft undergrowth, meadows, cultivated fields, torrent mud, gravel, crushed stone of excavated earth, always conducting to panoramas as vast as on high summits. This massive group of hills, which is so particular, therefore offers routes for everybody: for the family with children, for elderly walkers, for untiring trekkers, for expert excursionists. All the 31 itineraries present on the Paper and described in the Guide Book, are minutely underlined on the territory with the following respective colours: ORANGE: Arpino, RED: Casalvieri, BLUE: Santopadre, so as that they may all be done quite safely alone (it is advisable though to always be informed beforehand on the state of the paths). A guide represents, however, the possibility of deepening ones knowledge of the places that will be seen, of the people that live in these areas and also of getting hold of typical local products directly during the excursion. A guide is absolutely recommended in the case of winter excursions when snow may render the signals less visible. A guide is indispensable if one wishes to go on excursions for more than one day and to spend the night in bivouac.
